MID CENTURY TRAVEL
Southern California via United Airlines. Circa 1955.
This stunning and rare poster from 1955 promotes United Airlines routes to Southern California. The poster was created by Stan Galli who was a California painter, illustrator and printmaker. He is best remembered for the series of posters he designed for United Airlines in the 1950s and 60s. A variation of the image was reused by Orbitz in 2006 for their "Planet Earth" campaign.
For this poster promoting Southern California as a travel destination, a carefree blonde woman in green cat-eye sunglasses with wind tussled hair smiles under the shade of palms as a lavish 5-Star hotel poolside scene unfolds behind her complete with frolicking partygoers, bouncing beachballs and professional waiters in white coats.
The imagery perfectly evokes the hedonistic lifestyle of Southern California in the mid-1950s & 60s. Galli's designs, always peppered with a sense of fun and style, are iconic and represent for many the Mad Men era of advertising in America.
The Original Lithograph Poster which hangs in the Buffalo River library, has been archivally scanned and enhanced. We offer this Museum Quality Giclée Reproduction Print.
