Mid Century Golden Age of Travel
The Mid Century Golden Age of Travel generally refers to the period 1950s and the 1960s, characterized by a peak in luxury air travel with glamorous in-flight experiences, opulent accommodations, and a widespread desire to explore the world.
Cocktail lounges, five course meals, caviar served from ice sculptures and an endless flow of champagne: life on board airplanes was quite different during the “golden age of travel,” and is fondly remembered for its glamour and luxury.
It coincided with the dawn of the jet age. Air travel at that time was something special. It was luxurious. It was smooth. It was fast. People dressed up for the experience.
Airlines were marketing their flights as the luxurious means of transport, because in the early 1950s they were up against the cruise liners.
Vibrant and visually appealing travel posters depicting exotic destinations were used extensively to promote travel.
All of the original posters in this collection, hang in the Buffalo River Co Library.
