Heritage Tables FAQ

Product Information

Heritage Tables are our collection of heirloom-quality furniture that physically embodies authentic American experiences. Each piece carries genuine heritage within its fibers—the actual patina created by tobacco smoke in century-old barn wood, areas worn smooth by generations, and craftsmanship that speaks to a time when things were built to last.

Unlike mass-produced furniture with manufactured "distressing," Heritage Tables showcase character that can only be acquired through time and real use. Our artisans carefully transform these heritage rich materials—whether from Tobacco Barn Revival collections, Farm Barn Revival structures, or Witness Tree timbers—into functional centerpieces designed to witness the next century of family gatherings. Each collection is a limited edition, determined by the materials available from its specific source, ensuring every table and bench maintains its connection to a genuine American story.

Our collections include:

  • Tobacco Barn Revival Collections: Tables and benches from reclaimed tobacco barn timbers
  • Farm Barn Revival Collections: Furniture from agricultural barns, buildings or structures
  • Witness Tree Collections: Pieces created from significant trees that have witnessed decades of American history
  • Special Collections: Unique offerings honoring specific aspects of American heritage

Across all Heritage Tables collections, we offer five distinctive designs that balance contemporary functionality with respect for heritage materials:

  • Modern Farmhouse Design: Clean lines with heritage character
  • Traditional Breadboard Design: Classic American farmhouse styling
  • Tall Field Design: Elevated height for contemporary gathering
  • Apalachicola Design: Distinctive round farmhouse table
  • Heavy Timber Design: Showcasing substantial structural elements

For our most exceptional pieces, we offer John's Signature Collection representing the pinnacle of craftsmanship and material quality across all our Heritage Tables lines.

Each design approach honors the authentic character of the source materials while creating functional pieces that will serve families for generations. Unlike furniture that simply looks old, Heritage Tables pieces carry genuine heritage within their fibers—a heritage that will continue to develop as they witness the next century of family gatherings.

At Buffalo River Co every table, bench, chair, hiking stick and other furniture is crafted from real wood reclaimed timbers, posts and lumber from old barns used for agriculture, livestock, tobacco drying and other farming activities. The wood shows the effects of tobacco smoke curing, and long-term aging due to weather and farm use. The wood contains cracks, blemishes, knots, nail holes, insect holes, saw marks, sunspots and fading, and the effects of weather.

The wood comes from old barns taken down in Tennessee, Kentucky, and the Southeast U.S. The barns we select are between 100 to 150 years old. The species are predominately oak with a smattering of other hardwoods. The wood is full of inherent character. Only the elements, oxidation, time and the heritage earned from the effect of generational family farming cause the wood to gain the incomparable patina.

We embrace the Time Worn Character that is emblematic of our Furniture. The patina aged character our Furniture provides its unique charm, not flaws. We love wood with a story. These details honor the material's history and make each piece authentically beautiful.

Time Worn Character refers to the unique patina and marks that tell the wood's story, including:

  • Cracks and blemishes
  • Knots
  • Nail and insect holes
  • Saw marks
  • Sunspots and fading
  • Effects of weather and farm use

These are not imperfections, rather features that honor the material's history and make each piece authentically beautiful.

Reclaimed wood has a truly unique character and aesthetic, and every piece tells its own rich, distinctive story. When you see the knots, cracks, nail holes, oxide stains, saw trace marks, natural weathered patina or the echo of those who worked in the barn in generations past as evidenced through worn smooth door jambs and the like … an embodied essence is there, ingrained within the wood.

Reclaimed wood offers significant advantages:

  • Environmental Sustainability: Reduces deforestation
  • Lower Carbon Footprint: Requires less energy compared to new wood harvesting
  • Increased Durability: Pre-weathered wood is more resistant to warping and has better stability than newly-harvested wood
  • Unique Aesthetic: Natural imperfections add distinctive character
  • Reduced Landfill Waste: Repurposes existing materials
  • Historical Significance: Each piece tells a unique story and serves as a time capsule to another era

Oftentimes, reclaimed wood has better grain quality and stability than newly-harvested wood, as it has already undergone the natural aging and seasoning process over time. By weathering decades of use, reclaimed wood has proven its durability.

As we reclaim timber from barns, and before we build tables or benches, each piece of wood spends time in a kiln to sanitize it. We kiln dry our reclaimed wood to ensure the proper moisture content and to eradicate any living insects, larvae and/or mold spores that could be present in the wood. Kiln drying sanitizes the wood and helps improve the stability of the wood.

To give our furniture that "in the wood" look finish, we use Rubio Monocoat Oil Plus 2C, which is a hand rubbed natural oil and hardwax finish that is VOC-free. It leaves a durable soft matte finish that highlights the natural fibers, texture, and beauty of the wood.

Rubio Monocoat's Oil Plus 2C is a revolutionary, plant-based, hardwax oil wood finish. As the name implies, in just one simple application you get protection for wood. It is used for flooring, furniture, cabinetry, millwork and just about any wood project imaginable. Oil Plus 2C works by forming a molecular bond with the topmost fibers of the wood. This results in a durable finish with great wear, water and heat resistance, all while keeping the natural look and feel of the wood.

Care & Maintenance

Rubio Monocoat Oil Plus 2C is a natural and environmentally friendly oil. It creates an extremely durable finish and enhances the natural beauty and grain of wood furniture.

Caring for your Rubio Monocoat oil finished surface is simple, and when done properly, keeps your furniture looking beautiful for a lifetime. There should never be a need for a re-coat or a messy re-sand and refinish.

With the purchase of any our Heritage Tables, Benches or other furniture, we include a surface care kit that provides a bottle of Rubio Monocoat Surface Care Spray.

  • Our furniture finished with Rubio MonoCoat is meant for daily use, and does not need to be babied, but that does not mean to treat it carelessly. We encourage you to think about it like you might think about a glass coffee table, or the hood of a car. It is fine to set things on it and use it frequently, but you wouldn't want to throw your keychain or something rough across the surface.
  • After your wood surfaces have been treated with Rubio MonoCoat, and it has been allowed to fully cure, it is generally water resistant. That does not mean waterproof, but most spills and condensation can simply be wiped up with a clean cloth rag. A lightly dampened rag may be used to wipe the surface if moisture is required to pick up something dried or caked on.
  • For very hot surfaces (such as the bottom of a pan fresh from the stovetop or oven) we recommend using a trivet, potholder, kitchen towel, or something else similar beneath so it does not mar or scorch the surface of the natural wood.
  • For daily use and cleaning you can simply use a clean towel to wipe up spills and moisture. If something persists, feel free to use a slightly damp rag or towel and a little elbow grease.
  • ⚠️ IMPORTANT: Please DO NOT USE any harsh chemicals, sprays, Magic Eraser, or anything similar to clean the wood surface. The caustic nature or solvents present in many commercially cleaners available can have harmful effects on a natural finish and may damage both the function and appearance.
  • If any soap or cleaner is desired, please use Rubio Surface Care Spray (which is Rubio's specially formulated soap product and will not damage the finish).
  • With the purchase of any our Heritage Tables, Benches or other furniture, we include a Rubio Maintenance and Surface Care Package. Surface Care Spray is used for general cleaning on Rubio Monocoat finished surfaces while retaining the natural matte finish of Rubio Monocoat Oil Plus 2C.

Partnerships

We are always seeking new Heritage Barns to reclaim and transform into New American Heirlooms. The process of reclaiming and renewing a barn is labor-intensive but rewarding. While we do not purchase barns outright, we offer a valuable service: we will completely dismantle the structure and leave you with a clean site where it once stood. Depending on the quantity and quality of usable reclaimed wood, we can build a table for your family that carries forward the barn's legacy, or we offer a profit-sharing program where you earn a commission on each table or bench sold from your barn's timber.

Contact us at info@buffaloriver.co to discuss your barn's potential new chapter!
